CSI Lessons: Cardiomyopathy

It’s not all the time that you pick up something interesting or good in whatever you are watching on the tube. Conservative and traditional parents would often say that watching too much television is not good for you; it corrupts the mind and pollutes it with nonsense and violence.
I admit I have been watching way too much CSI, but I did pick up a couple of “learnings”in some of its episodes; which for me is not nonsense at all. Thus, I would like to share with you…

Cardiomyopathy

Based on its medical definition found on the internet, Cardiomyopathy is generally what we call a heart failure. But I am more curious with a certain type which is called “Takotsubo” Cardiomyopathy. Takotsubo in Japan means “octopus pot”, which is actually an octopus trap, and it’s shape is how the heart looks like when it has ballooned due to the said illness.

And what’s really interesting would be one of the reasons why it is triggered. Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy or also known as stress cardiomyopathy, is when the muscles of the heart are weakened which is caused by emotional stress.

And to top things off, women are more prone to acquiring this illness.

Where am I going with this? It’s simple:

Heartbroken + Woman = Emotional Stress

Emotional Stress = Cardiac Arrest

Bottom Line:

A woman’s heart should be well-taken cared of.

(I just gave women a reason to tell their men how they should not break their hearts, or else they die…literally have a heart attack.)

CSI Lessons: Anatomy is Destiny

It’s not all the time that you pick up something interesting or good in whatever you are watching on the tube. Conservative and traditional parents would often say that watching too much television is not good for you; it corrupts the mind and pollutes it with nonsense and violence.

I admit I have been watching way too much CSI, but I did pick up a couple of “learnings” in some of its episodes; which for me is not nonsense at all. Thus, I would like to share with you…

Anatomy is Destiny - Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud was a neurologist who was known to have developed theories about the unconcisous mind, a person's dreams and ego, and created the discipline of Psychoanalysis or Psychotherapy. In one of his works, it was mentioned that Anatomy is Destiny, that one's personality and behavior is determined by the gender.

Do you believe that your personality, character traits, and behavior in Life, is all determined by what your gender is? Basically this is the gist of Freud’s theory.

So as a male, I am expected to be like a brute or a caveman. To mention a few things:
  • Men don’t cry
  • Men do not watch movies like The Notebook
  • Men do not hold hands with other Men
  • Men should not get a manicure or pedicure
  • Men don’t dance or sing
  • Men are fearless
  • Men will never ask for directions
  • Men don’t wear pink or tight jeans
If I am really lost and would not ask for directions, what destiny awaits me? If I cry, does that really make me less of a man?

Now of course, this is just a theory. Do you think the culture or environment around you plays a role? I believe it does. Take for example; if you send a woman to military training, no matter how feminine she may be when she was born, she will be disciplined and battle-hardened into a soldier.

But there are indeed certain things that men can do and women can't, and vice versa:

Men can:
  • wear a beard
  • go topless in public
  • pee while standing up
  • sleep around and be called a player
Women can:
  • get pregnant
  • flirt with the bouncer when trying to enter a club
  • can wear men's clothing
  • can dance together on the dancefloor
I am not quite sure how genetics would affect one’s personality or behavior. Genes will possibly affect the physical attributes but definitely not one’s character. I have even read stories of physically challenged males that achieve feats that other able bodied men have not. That’s because their behavior in life probably revolves around perseverance and commitment, a behavior which most likely was cultivated through the years and not because they are born as males.

I guess this is what Freud's theory speaks of, when there are certain things that men and women were gentically meant to do and live by. Where it is the law of Life that you need to follow, thus might affect one's personality and behavior.

CSI Lessons: Megan's Law

It’s not all the time that you pick up something interesting or good in whatever you are watching on the tube. Conservative and traditional parents would often say that watching too much television is not good for you; it corrupts the mind and pollutes it with nonsense and violence.

I admit I have been watching way too much CSI, but I did pick up a couple of “learnings” in some of its episodes; which for me is not nonsense at all. Thus, I would like to share with you…

Megan’s Law

In the United States, there is this law that mandates convicted sex offenders to register themselves at the local law enforcement of where they are residing after they are released from prison or psychiatric rehabilitation.

They are also required to notify the police of any changes in address and status of employment. The local law enforcement is then required to share the information of the sex offender, such as full name, home address, and a picture, which is then shared and displayed throughout the community in various mediums such as local newspapers, pamphlets, and community websites.

The primary purpose of this is to make the community aware and vigilant in reporting any suspicious actions by the individual or unusual occurrences within the vicinity of his residence.

Megan’s Law, also known as the Sexual Offender (Jacob Wetterling) Act of 1994, was crafted in response to the murder of seven year old Megan Kanka on July 29, 1994, by her neighbor who was a convicted sex offender, who served a total of 7 years in a correctional facility but was eventually released into the general population.

Unfortunately, a study would show that this law may not be that effective, considering that the state incurs huge costs in maintaining the database, and historical data indicates that despite its implementation, there would still be reoccurrences of sexual assaults and it did not stop first time offenders in committing the said crime.

It made me wonder if it would be effective if our country would employ such preventive measures. If not for sexual offenders, can it be revised or tweaked in such a way that it can be applied also to any convicted felon who was charged of any crime such as theft? Would there be any grave repercussions if such legislation is enacted? Would it be considered as an invasion to privacy if the community puts surveillance on the individual? Does it give the civilians more power to invoke citizen’s arrest, or will it trigger a lynch mob or vigilante execution?

Let’s just hope that our taxes are put to good use and that the government and local police are really doing everything in their capacity to ensure the safety and protection of each and every one of us.

CSI Lessons: The Three Furies

It’s not all the time that you pick up something interesting or good in whatever you are watching on the tube. Conservative and traditional parents would often say that watching too much television is not good for you; it corrupts the mind and pollutes it with nonsense and violence.

I admit I have been watching way too much CSI, but I did pick up a couple of “learnings” in some of its episodes; which for me is not nonsense at all. Thus, I would like to share with you…

The 3 Furies
(Including Dike, the Goddess of Justice)

I am a huge fan of Mythology, ever since it was introduced to me in my 1st year of high school. I loved the fantasy of Gods and Goddesses, how their powers shaped the destiny of mankind. That is also why I enjoy watching movies like, Clash of the Titans, 300, Prince of Persia, Jason and the Argonauts, and the Odyssey. I also spent hours playing the God of War video game series.

In this time and age, we are plagued with crimes that remain unsolved or without justice. This has even resulted in some of us losing confidence in our government and the local police and would often hope for a vigilante intervention.

Come forth, the Three Furies and Dike.

The Three Furies; Alecto, Magaera and Tisiphone = Anger, Jealousy and Vengeance. Surely a very deadly trio. Viewed as the protector of ethical laws, they would even be guardians of the poor and punish those who even commit petty theft. And when I say punish, they do it without mercy, relentlessly tormenting them, and no amount of prayer to the Gods or a pool of tears can stop them from hammering down their wrath. If they encounter any difficulty in a particular criminal, they call on Dike, the Goddess of Justice, to bring forth a hard and swift judgment.

So in the end, Justice is always served. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a mythological world.

Thus, I will just leave you with a passage from the Bible…

Ezekiel 25:17

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you!”

CSI Lessons: Maslow’s HON

It’s not all the time that you pick up something interesting or good in whatever you are watching on the tube. Conservative and traditional parents would often say that watching too much television is not good for you; it corrupts the mind and pollutes it with nonsense and violence.

I admit I have been watching way too much CSI, but I did pick up a couple of “learnings” in some of its episodes; which for me is not nonsense at all. Thus, I would like to share with you…

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham Maslow, a psychology professor during the 1930s through 1950s, studied and theorized the human development, focusing on the stages of the fundamental needs of an individual, which led to the theory of the Hierarchy of Needs.

The pyramid above depicts the different levels of needs that one person can or cannot live without. This shows what the fundamental needs are at the bottom and what “needs” are somewhat developed or acquired at the higher tiers.

1st Level: Physiological Needs
The air we breathe, the food and water we consume, clothing and shelter. These are “needs” that we literally require for us to survive. If these “needs” are not satisfied, our bodies will cease to function properly. (Obviously without air, you’re dead)

2nd Level: Safety Needs
Since we’ve already met the requirements of the 1st level, we then proceed to obtaining safety and security needs. Generally these would pertain to having financial stability or a source of income, medical insurance or health coverage for you and your family members, and the overall well-being of a person.

3rd Level: Love and Belonging
The Need to love, be loved, to be accepted in a society, to belong. We try to maintain that sense of acceptance and belonging by giving significance to relationships we have such as friends, families and loved ones. We strive to be socially accepted as well, by probably joining sports events, clubs, weekend parties, office activities and the like.

4th Level: Esteem
Respect. Recognition. Achievement. Building up on your self-esteem and reputation is the next level. You now seek fame and glory and for other to respect you. There are actually two sub-levels of Esteem; the 1st sub-level is the need for the respect of others, the need for recognition, establishing a high status of fame or prestige, and drawing attention to yourself. The higher sub-level is the need for self-respect, inner competence, self-confidence, independence and freedom. The higher level means that there is already that “need” to embark on a quest for better knowledge.

5th Level: Self-Actualization
Obtaining your full potential, becoming what you can really be. The desire to achieve the greatest excellence in one’s being. In order to attain this level, one must not just fully achieve and understand the lower-level needs, but one must have a mastery of it.

“What a man can be, he must be.”
– Abraham Maslow
